Tourism in Guelma

Guelma, ancient Calama, is one of eastern Algeria's most historic cities, famous for its admirably preserved Roman theater and for Hammam Meskhoutine — natural thermal springs among the world's hottest (96°C). At 280 m altitude at the foot of the Mahouna massif, it is surrounded by varied landscapes: fertile plains, cork-oak forests, multiple thermal springs, and Beni Salah National Park, a refuge for the Barbary stag. Guelma is also sadly famous for the May 1945 massacres, a founding event of Algerian nationalist consciousness. It is a must-stop cultural and thermal destination for exploring eastern Algeria.

History & culture

Calama was an important Numidian city before the Roman conquest. Under Rome, it became a prosperous colony in the 2nd century, equipped with a magnificent theater, baths, forum and Christian basilica. Saint Augustine preached there from neighboring Hippo. Vandals then Byzantines occupied the city, then Islamization in the 7th century. In the Middle Ages, Guelma was a stop on the Constantine-Tunis road. Under the Ottomans, it was administered from Constantine. The French occupied it in 1836 and developed agriculture (cereals, vineyards). On May 8, 1945, Allied victory day, the Sétif and Guelma independence demonstrations were bloodily suppressed — the massacres killed thousands in the wilaya, a triggering event of nationalist consciousness. At independence, Guelma became a wilaya in 1974.

Local cuisine

Guelmi cuisine inherits agricultural traditions of the east and Ottoman influences. Couscous with mutton and dried vegetables, the Sunday dish, is generously served. Guelma chakhchoukha, with crumbled flatbread and spicy sauce, rivals those of Biskra and Sétif. Lamb tagine with prunes and almonds is refined. Bourekat stuffed with minced meat or tuna accompany aperitifs. Honey and almond pastries (zlabia, makroud, baklawa) are a Guelmi pride. Mahouna forest honey, gathered on eucalyptus and wildflowers, is delicious. Mountain goat cheeses and regional figs are renowned terroir products. Arabic coffee and mint tea complete tables.

How to get there

From Algiers, Guelma is 550 km east via the East-West motorway (6-7h by car). Constantine's Mohamed Boudiaf airport (95 km, 1h30 by taxi) is the nearest air hub: numerous daily flights. SNTF runs Algiers-Guelma rail services (~9h, night train). Long-distance buses depart daily from Caroubier (Algiers). Locally, taxis and city buses serve the city and thermal sites (Hammam Meskhoutine 22 km). Car rental advised to explore Beni Salah park, Bouchegouf waterfalls and archaeological sites.

When to visit Guelma?

Guelma has a Mediterranean continental climate, hotter in the plain than Constantine. Summers (June-August) hot (25-36°C), warm nights in plain. Winters (December-February) mild (5-15°C), moderate rainfall (550-700 mm/year). Spring (April-May) is the best time: perfect temperatures (16-24°C), green nature, blossoming forests. Autumn (September-October) mild and pleasant. Avoid July-August (heat) for full-sun archaeology visits (Roman theater). Thermal springs visit year-round, ideal in winter.
