What to see and do — Guelma

Calama was an important Numidian city before the Roman conquest. Under Rome, it became a prosperous colony in the 2nd century, equipped with a magnificent theater, baths, forum and Christian basilica. Saint Augustine preached there from neighboring Hippo. Vandals then Byzantines occupied the city, then Islamization in the 7th century. In the Middle Ages, Guelma was a stop on the Constantine-Tunis road. Under the Ottomans, it was administered from Constantine. The French occupied it in 1836 and developed agriculture (cereals, vineyards). On May 8, 1945, Allied victory day, the Sétif and Guelma independence demonstrations were bloodily suppressed — the massacres killed thousands in the wilaya, a triggering event of nationalist consciousness. At independence, Guelma became a wilaya in 1974.
