Guelma, ancient Calama, is one of eastern Algeria's most historic cities, famous for its admirably preserved Roman theater and for Hammam Meskhoutine — natural thermal springs among the world's hottest (96°C). At 280 m altitude at the foot of the Mahouna massif, it is surrounded by varied landscapes: fertile plains, cork-oak forests, multiple thermal springs, and Beni Salah National Park, a refuge for the Barbary stag. Guelma is also sadly famous for the May 1945 massacres, a founding event of Algerian nationalist consciousness. It is a must-stop cultural and thermal destination for exploring eastern Algeria.
