Tourism in Tébessa

Tébessa, ancient Theveste, is one of Algeria's most history-laden wilayas. 600 km east of Algiers on the Tunisian border, it hosts one of the Maghreb's finest Roman ensembles: Caracalla's Triumphal Arch (213 AD), the Byzantine Christian basilica (5th century) — one of the largest in the ancient Christian world — the Minerva temple, and nearly intact Byzantine ramparts. The region is also known for its Nementcha mountains (eastern Aurès), phosphate mines and strategic border role. For Roman and Christian archaeology enthusiasts, Tébessa is a major destination too little known.

History & culture

Theveste was founded by the Numidians, then under Augustus (1st century BC) became a prosperous Roman city, capital of the III Legion. Under Trajan, the magnificent triumphal arch was built in 213 AD. The city prospered through cereal agriculture and trade. Christianity took root early: the Theveste basilica (Byzantine 5th century) is one of the largest in the ancient Christian world, with five naves and a cloister. Vandals then Byzantines occupied the city. 7th-century Islamization saw the city decline. In the Middle Ages, Tébessa was a commercial stop between Tunis and the south. The Ottomans attached it to the Constantine beylik. The French entered in 1842. During the independence war, the Nementchas were a major FLN maquis. At independence, Tébessa became a wilaya in 1974. Today it's a major mining (phosphate, iron) and border hub.

Local cuisine

Tébessa cuisine marries Chaoui Berber (Aurès), Arab and Tunisian (border proximity) traditions. Mutton couscous with vegetables is Sunday's, generously served. Chakhchoukha with crumbled flatbread and spicy sauce is highly appreciated. Mutton berkoukes (large-grain couscous) is typical of the Aurès. Barley flatbread (kesra) accompanies every meal. Honey and almond pastries (baklawa, date makrout) are a pride. Cardamom Arabic coffee and mint tea are ubiquitous. Nementcha honey and local olive oil are artisan products. Tunisian influences: harissa, egg brik sometimes served.
