What to see and do — Tébessa
Theveste was founded by the Numidians, then under Augustus (1st century BC) became a prosperous Roman city, capital of the III Legion. Under Trajan, the magnificent triumphal arch was built in 213 AD. The city prospered through cereal agriculture and trade. Christianity took root early: the Theveste basilica (Byzantine 5th century) is one of the largest in the ancient Christian world, with five naves and a cloister. Vandals then Byzantines occupied the city. 7th-century Islamization saw the city decline. In the Middle Ages, Tébessa was a commercial stop between Tunis and the south. The Ottomans attached it to the Constantine beylik. The French entered in 1842. During the independence war, the Nementchas were a major FLN maquis. At independence, Tébessa became a wilaya in 1974. Today it's a major mining (phosphate, iron) and border hub.
