Tourism in Ouargla

Ouargla, capital of eastern Algerian Sahara, is one of the great historical and cultural oases of the south. Located 800 km southeast of Algiers, it's famous for its ancestral mud ksar, renowned Saharan university, central Sidi Brahim square, and role as a major oil hub (Hassi Messaoud fields 80 km away). The nearby Mzab region (Ghardaïa, Beni Isguen) influences local Mzabite architecture and culture. Ouargla is a strategic crossroads between Ghardaïa, Touggourt, Hassi Messaoud and the eastern erg — an essential stop for those exploring central and eastern Algerian Sahara. Both traditional and modern, it charms with its authenticity and centrality.

History & culture

Ouargla is an ancestral oasis inhabited since antiquity by Berber Zenetes. In the 9th century, Ibadites (Kharijism branch) settled here and created an autonomous religious community — the origin of nearby Mzab. The city became a major caravan trade center between Sijilmassa, Timbuktu and Tripoli. In the Middle Ages, it was nominally under Hafsid then Ottoman authority. The French penetrated Ouargla in 1872 and made it a strategic stop. The 1956 discovery of the Hassi Messaoud oil field (one of the world's largest) transformed the region — Ouargla became a major oil hub. At independence, Ouargla became a wilaya in 1974. Kasdi Merbah University, created in 1988, makes it a major university hub of southern Algeria.

Local cuisine

Ouargla cuisine fuses Saharan and Mzabite traditions. Chakhchoukha with crumbled flatbread and spicy mutton sauce is Sunday's. Mutton-and-date couscous is a pride. Mutton marqa with tomatoes and spices slow-simmers. Palm grove Deglet Nour dates are eaten fresh in autumn. Rfis with dates (semolina, dates, butter) is hearty. Honey and almond pastries (baklawa, makroud) abound. Taguella under sand accompanies bivouacs. Coffee and mint tea pace visits. Camel milk (chaubi) and Saharan honey complete the offering. Mzabite cuisine (from Ghardaïa, 200 km) influences local gastronomy.
