What to see and do — Ouargla
Ouargla is an ancestral oasis inhabited since antiquity by Berber Zenetes. In the 9th century, Ibadites (Kharijism branch) settled here and created an autonomous religious community — the origin of nearby Mzab. The city became a major caravan trade center between Sijilmassa, Timbuktu and Tripoli. In the Middle Ages, it was nominally under Hafsid then Ottoman authority. The French penetrated Ouargla in 1872 and made it a strategic stop. The 1956 discovery of the Hassi Messaoud oil field (one of the world's largest) transformed the region — Ouargla became a major oil hub. At independence, Ouargla became a wilaya in 1974. Kasdi Merbah University, created in 1988, makes it a major university hub of southern Algeria.
