Tourism in Mostaganem
Mostaganem, a coastal city in northwestern Algeria, is famous for its traditional fishing port, family beaches stretching along 124 km of coastline, and the Djaouhara Theater, which hosts the National Amateur Theater Festival each year — one of the Maghreb's oldest. The old town of Tidjit, with its Ottoman alleys and historic mosques, bears witness to a rich identity. Mostaganem also produces wine and citrus in its fertile hinterland. History & culture
Mostaganem (Mestghanem in Arabic) is mentioned from the Middle Ages as a Berber trading port. In the 13th century, it was under the Tlemcen Zianids, then fell to the Spanish in 1505 who built a fortress. The Turks reconquered the city in 1558 under Salah Raïs, turning it into a naval and corsair base — Mostaganem's port played a key role in the Algiers Ottoman fleet. Mascara, capital of Abdelkader, is in the hinterland — Mostaganem thus knew the Emir's resistance against the French. Occupied by France in 1833, it developed as a wine and agricultural port. At independence, it was a prosperous wilaya thanks to fishing and irrigated agriculture. The Amateur Theater Festival, created in 1967 by Ould Abderrahmane Kaki, is an Algerian cultural reference.

Mostaganem cuisine honors the sea in abundance. Mostaganémoise paella, an Andalusian legacy, blends rice, seafood and saffron. Charcoal-grilled fish (sardine, sea bream, mullet) by the port is a ritual. Mostaganémoise harira, a red soup, opens winter meals. Bourekat with tuna or anchovies are popular as aperitifs. From the land, lamb tagine with prunes and rfis with dates are family classics. Honey pastries (zlabia, makroud el-ksar, baklawa) abound. Mostaganem wine, produced in coastal vineyards, has a long colonial tradition. Citrus (oranges, Sirat mandarins) is a local pride, in pressed juices or jams.
How to get there
From Algiers, Mostaganem is 360 km west via the East-West motorway (4h-4h30 by car). Oran's Es Sénia airport (80 km, 1h by taxi) is the most practical air hub: numerous daily flights from Algiers and internationally. SNTF provides Algiers-Mostaganem rail links (~6-7h, direct train). Long-distance buses depart daily from Caroubier (Algiers) — the cheapest option. Locally, taxis and city buses serve the beaches (Stidia, Sablettes) and port. To explore the hinterland's preserved coves, car rental is recommended.
When to visit Mostaganem?
Mostaganem enjoys a Mediterranean temperate climate, drier than the east. Summers (June-September) warm (26-32°C), sea at 23-26°C, perfect swimming, constant sea breeze. Winters (December-February) mild (8-15°C), moderate rainfall (400-500 mm/year). Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are sublime: pleasant temperatures (16-25°C), flowering nature (orange trees, vines), quiet beaches. Climate is drier than the east Algerian coast, favoring year-round visits.
