What to see and do — Mostaganem
Mostaganem (Mestghanem in Arabic) is mentioned from the Middle Ages as a Berber trading port. In the 13th century, it was under the Tlemcen Zianids, then fell to the Spanish in 1505 who built a fortress. The Turks reconquered the city in 1558 under Salah Raïs, turning it into a naval and corsair base — Mostaganem's port played a key role in the Algiers Ottoman fleet. Mascara, capital of Abdelkader, is in the hinterland — Mostaganem thus knew the Emir's resistance against the French. Occupied by France in 1833, it developed as a wine and agricultural port. At independence, it was a prosperous wilaya thanks to fishing and irrigated agriculture. The Amateur Theater Festival, created in 1967 by Ould Abderrahmane Kaki, is an Algerian cultural reference.
