Tourism in Médéa

Médéa, a city perched at 1,000 m altitude in the Blidean Atlas, is one of Algeria's most historic. Capital of a powerful Ottoman beylik for three centuries, it retains its winding medina, beylical palaces and highland gardens. The region offers spectacular landscapes: Chiffa Gorges with their famous Barbary macaques, Tamesguida Pass (1,100 m), cedar and pine forests, Ghrib reservoir lake. It is also the historic homeland of writer Mouloud Mammeri and cradle of refined Kabyle-Andalusian cuisine. Médéa marries living Ottoman history with accessible mountain nature, just 90 km south of Algiers.

History & culture

Médéa, perched on the eponymous plateau, has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was the station of Lamida (or Medias) on the road from Caesarea (Cherchell) to the south. In the Middle Ages it came under the Hammadids then the Tlemcen Zianids. Under the Ottomans (16th century), it became capital of the Titteri beylik, one of the three great beyliks of the Regency of Algiers — administering a vast interior territory. This period lasted three centuries: Médéa grew rich, its palaces, mosques and madrasas were built. The French took it in 1830 and made it an administrative and military center. During the independence war, the Médéen Atlas was a major FLN maquis (Wilaya IV). The wilaya was created in 1974. Today, Médéa remains a prosperous administrative and wine center (AOC wine production, colonial legacy still active).

Local cuisine

Médéen cuisine fuses Kabyle (Atlas), Andalusian and Ottoman heritages. Médéen rechta, a refined dish of homemade pasta and white chicken sauce, is served on grand occasions. Couscous with farm butter (smen) and mutton is Sunday's. Lamb tagine with prunes, an Andalusian heritage, is delicate. Honey and almond pastries (baklawa, kalb el louz, makroud) are a Médéen pride — Médéa is renowned for fine pastry. Médéa AOC wines, colonial vineyard legacy, are among Algeria's best (powerful reds, fresh whites). Black Arabic coffee with cardamom and mint tea pace the days. Cedar honey and mountain goat cheeses complete the terroir.
