What to see and doMédéa

Médéa, perched on the eponymous plateau, has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was the station of Lamida (or Medias) on the road from Caesarea (Cherchell) to the south. In the Middle Ages it came under the Hammadids then the Tlemcen Zianids. Under the Ottomans (16th century), it became capital of the Titteri beylik, one of the three great beyliks of the Regency of Algiers — administering a vast interior territory. This period lasted three centuries: Médéa grew rich, its palaces, mosques and madrasas were built. The French took it in 1830 and made it an administrative and military center. During the independence war, the Médéen Atlas was a major FLN maquis (Wilaya IV). The wilaya was created in 1974. Today, Médéa remains a prosperous administrative and wine center (AOC wine production, colonial legacy still active).
