Tourism in Mascara

Mascara, historic capital of Abdelkader's state (1832-1847), is a high-plateau city in the Oran region with a glorious past. At 540 m altitude at the foot of the Beni Chougrane massif, it was the cradle of Algerian resistance to French colonization. It is also a land of renowned vineyards (Coteaux de Mascara AOC, a still-living colonial heritage), refined cuisine, and Ottoman and colonial architectural heritage. The region offers rolling plateaus, cork-oak forests, the Bouhanifia thermal hammam, and the eponymous reservoir lake — a peaceful stop off the classic tourist circuits but rich in history and terroir.

History & culture

Mascara (Mu'askar in Arabic, "the camp") was founded in the 16th century as a Turkish garrison. The city took on major historical significance when Emir Abdelkader was proclaimed Sultan there in November 1832, aged 24, by the western tribes. Mascara then became the capital of the first modern Algerian state, which resisted the French for 15 years. The city hosted palaces, madrasas, weapons workshops, and an administration. The French took and destroyed it in 1835, but Abdelkader briefly retook it. At his surrender in 1847, Mascara passed permanently under French rule. Under colonization, it became a prosperous wine center (Mascara wines were among the most renowned of French Algeria). At independence, it kept its status as Algerian wine capital and agricultural hub, celebrated as "Abdelkader's city."

Local cuisine

Mascari cuisine reflects the heritage of the Oran high plateaus. Chicken rechta, a family Sunday dish, blends homemade steamed pasta with white sauce spiced with seasonings. Couscous with khlii (mutton dried in fat, preserved all winter) is a terroir treasure. Tagines with prunes, dried apricots and almonds are refined. Barley flatbread (kesra) accompanies local Beni Chougrane honey. On the sweet side, date makrout and honey baklawa scent celebrations. Mascara wines — colonial legacy — are among the country's most renowned (powerful reds, fresh whites). Beni Chougrane olive oils and steppe lamb (Sidaoun breed) complete the terroir.

How to get there
