Mascara, historic capital of Abdelkader's state (1832-1847), is a high-plateau city in the Oran region with a glorious past. At 540 m altitude at the foot of the Beni Chougrane massif, it was the cradle of Algerian resistance to French colonization. It is also a land of renowned vineyards (Coteaux de Mascara AOC, a still-living colonial heritage), refined cuisine, and Ottoman and colonial architectural heritage. The region offers rolling plateaus, cork-oak forests, the Bouhanifia thermal hammam, and the eponymous reservoir lake — a peaceful stop off the classic tourist circuits but rich in history and terroir.
