Tourism in Chlef

Chlef, formerly El Asnam, is the capital of the Chéliff valley — Algeria's major agricultural basin. 200 km west of Algiers, halfway between the capital and Oran, it's known for its fertile plain irrigated by Algeria's longest river (the Chéliff), its century-old olive groves, and sadly for the terrible October 10, 1980 earthquake (magnitude 7.3, ~2,600 dead) that destroyed the city and deeply marked Algerian memory. Rebuilt to modern seismic standards, Chlef is today a prosperous agricultural and industrial wilaya, a practical stop between Algiers and Oran, with forested massifs (Beni Hassan) and Ténès beach to the north.

History & culture

The Chéliff valley has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was a prosperous agricultural region (Castellum Tingitanum, old name). In the Middle Ages, Chlef passed under Almoravid then Almohad authority. The Ottomans attached it to the Western beylik. The French penetrated in 1843 and founded the modern city as Orléansville, in honor of the Orléans dynasty. On September 9, 1954, a major earthquake already hit the city (~1,500 dead). At independence, Orléansville resumed the name El Asnam. On October 10, 1980, a new devastating earthquake (magnitude 7.3) destroyed 80% of buildings, killing 2,600 and injuring 8,000 — one of the worst Mediterranean earthquakes of the 20th century. The city was rebuilt and renamed Chlef. Today it's a major agricultural and industrial hub.

Local cuisine

Chlef cuisine marries Oran traditions and Mediterranean culture. Mutton couscous with garden vegetables is Sunday's. Chicken rechta, a celebration dish, marks ceremonies. Ténès seafood (grilled sardines, octopus salad) is savory. Olives and Chéliff valley olive oil are world-renowned — Chlef produces some of Algeria's best olive oils. Citrus, apricots and muscat grapes from irrigated plains are a pride. Honey and almond pastries (baklawa, makroud) abound. Arabic coffee and mint tea pace the days.

How to get there

From Algiers, Chlef is 200 km west via the East-West motorway (2h30 by car). Aboubekr Belkaïd airport, 20 km out, offers 2-3 weekly flights from Algiers (45 min) and some seasonal flights to France. SNTF runs an Algiers-Chlef rail link (~3h, direct train). Long-distance buses depart every 30 min from Caroubier (Algiers), 3h. Locally, taxis and city buses serve the city. For Ténès (50 km north, beach), forests and surrounding villages, car rental advised. Chlef is a practical stop on the Algiers-Oran route.

When to visit Chlef?

Chlef has a hot Mediterranean climate, more continental than the coast. Summers (June-August) very hot (24-38°C by day, 22-26°C night), sometimes heat-waves in plain. Winters (December-February) mild (8-16°C), moderate rainfall (400-600 mm/year). Spring (April-May) is sublime: perfect temperatures (15-25°C), green plains, olive trees in bloom. Autumn (September-October) mild and bright. Sea proximity softens climate at Ténès and coast.
