Chlef, formerly El Asnam, is the capital of the Chéliff valley — Algeria's major agricultural basin. 200 km west of Algiers, halfway between the capital and Oran, it's known for its fertile plain irrigated by Algeria's longest river (the Chéliff), its century-old olive groves, and sadly for the terrible October 10, 1980 earthquake (magnitude 7.3, ~2,600 dead) that destroyed the city and deeply marked Algerian memory. Rebuilt to modern seismic standards, Chlef is today a prosperous agricultural and industrial wilaya, a practical stop between Algiers and Oran, with forested massifs (Beni Hassan) and Ténès beach to the north.
