Tourism in Boumerdès

Boumerdès is the wilaya immediately east of Algiers, a historic seaside getaway for Algerois. Its 100 km of coastline offers a succession of family beaches (Boudouaou, Zemmouri, Cap Djinet, Dellys) and modern resort towns. The town of Dellys, ancient Phoenician and Roman Rusuccuru, retains a picturesque medina perched above the sea. The region bears the painful memory of the May 21, 2003 earthquake (magnitude 6.8, ~2,300 dead) which deeply rebuilt the wilaya. Today Boumerdès is a young, university wilaya (National Institute of Hydrocarbons), and remains Algiers' most accessible beach for weekends.

History & culture

The region has been inhabited since antiquity: Rusuccuru (Dellys) was an important Phoenician trading post then a prosperous Roman municipality. In the Middle Ages, Dellys became a trade and religious center under the Hammadids then Hafsids. The Ottomans built a maritime garrison there. The French occupied the coast in 1830. During colonization, the region developed agriculturally (Mitidja vineyards) and industrially (hydrocarbons at Cap Djinet later). Boumerdès as a distinct entity was created in 1984 (young wilaya). The May 21, 2003 earthquake hit the region severely (epicenter near Zemmouri), causing 2,300 deaths and the destruction of entire buildings in Boumerdès-town and Rouiba. Reconstruction has been massive since. Proximity to Algiers and seaside appeal make Boumerdès a dynamic wilaya today.

Local cuisine

Boumerdès marries Kabyle heritage (Beni Amrane in the interior) and coastal cuisine. Fish couscous with grouper and red mullet is a coastal celebration classic. Fish bourekat, flaky pastries stuffed with tuna or anchovies, accompany aperitifs. Marinated sardines (escabèche) are a Dellys specialty. Lamb tagine with prunes, an Algerois heritage, is widespread. On the sweet side, date makrout and honey baklawa are essentials. Goat cheese from Beni Amrane mountains and local eucalyptus honey are sought-after artisan products. Fresh juices (Mitidja orange, pomegranate) are ubiquitous in summer.

How to get there

Boumerdès is just 50 km east of Algiers via the A1 motorway (40 min by car, sometimes more on weekends). The ETUSA suburban train is ideal: Algiers-Boumerdès in 45 min (~80 DA), with stops at Boudouaou and Reghaïa beaches. Buses depart every 15 min from Boumerdès station to downtown Algiers. For Dellys (50 km east), take the panoramic RN24 (1h by car) or a shared taxi. For Cap Djinet and Zemmouri beaches, the coastal road is pleasant. Ideal by public transport from Algiers for a summer beach day-trip.
