History & culture

Touggourt is one of the oldest oases of the Algerian Sahara, mentioned from the 9th century in Arab chronicles. The region came under Arab Beni Hilal tribes in the 11th century, then in the 18th century became an independent sultanate — the Sultanate of Touggourt — led by the Beni Djellab dynasty. A major stop on trans-Saharan caravan trade (gold, dates, salt, ivory, slaves), Touggourt prospered through trade and intensive agriculture. The French penetrated the region in 1854 and fought the "battle of Touggourt" against insurgents. The city became a colonial stop and later an oil hub (nearby oil field). At independence, Touggourt was attached to Ouargla then Biskra, and finally made an autonomous wilaya in 2019.
