History & culture

Skikda was founded as Russicada in the 2nd century BC by the Phoenicians, then became a prosperous Roman colony under Emperor Trajan. The ancient city's ruins include a theater, baths, monumental cisterns — partially preserved beneath the modern town. Vandals, Byzantines, Hammadids, Hafsids then Ottomans followed. The French occupied it in 1838 and renamed it Philippeville, in honor of Louis-Philippe. The city developed as a Numidian wheat and iron ore export port. On August 20, 1955, under Zighoud Youcef's leadership, an FLN offensive triggered a regional uprising bloodily suppressed — a major event of the independence war. At independence in 1962, Philippeville resumed its Arabic name Skikda. Today it is Algeria's 3rd port and a strategic petrochemical hub.

Local cuisine

Skikda's table celebrates the generous coast. Charcoal-grilled sardines in spring-summer season are prepared with lemon and parsley. Fishermen's pageot à l'estouffade slow-simmers with tomato, garlic and olives. Skikda's h'rira is served in Ramadan. Bourekat (brick-pastry pockets filled with minced meat or tuna) accompany aperitifs. Fish kefta and stuffed squid are classics. Fresh juices (orange, pomegranate) and black cardamom Arabic coffee punctuate meals. Honey pastries (zlabia, makroud) are artisan-made in the medina. Collo honey, gathered on eucalyptus and wildflowers, is a local treasure.
