What to see and do — Skikda
Skikda was founded as Russicada in the 2nd century BC by the Phoenicians, then became a prosperous Roman colony under Emperor Trajan. The ancient city's ruins include a theater, baths, monumental cisterns — partially preserved beneath the modern town. Vandals, Byzantines, Hammadids, Hafsids then Ottomans followed. The French occupied it in 1838 and renamed it Philippeville, in honor of Louis-Philippe. The city developed as a Numidian wheat and iron ore export port. On August 20, 1955, under Zighoud Youcef's leadership, an FLN offensive triggered a regional uprising bloodily suppressed — a major event of the independence war. At independence in 1962, Philippeville resumed its Arabic name Skikda. Today it is Algeria's 3rd port and a strategic petrochemical hub.
