Tourism in Jijel
Jijel is one of Algeria's most naturally preserved wilayas. Its Coral Coast, the legendary RN43 coastal range between Béjaïa and Skikda, alternates turquoise beaches, plunging cliffs and dense forests cascading into the Mediterranean. Taza National Park, one of the last Barbary macaque refuges in Algeria, harbors ancient forests, karst caves (Cave of Wonders, Ziama Mansouriah Cave) and hiking trails. The coast is dotted with preserved coves (Aiguades Beach, Andalouse Beach, Rocher Noir Beach) where translucent water rivals the Mediterranean's finest beaches. Jijel remains a little-known secret of Algerian tourism.

History & culture
Jijel, ancient Igilgili, was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC. Under Rome, it was a modest trading port. After Vandal and Byzantine invasions, Jijel became a Barbary corsair haven in the Middle Ages. The Barbarossa brothers landed here in 1514 — it was at Jijel that the Barbarossas began the conquest leading to the Regency of Algiers. The city was a nest of Ottoman piracy for three centuries. The French occupied it in 1839, naming it Djidjelli. During the independence war, the Kabyle hinterland of Jijel was a major ALN maquis. At independence, the city became a wilaya in 1974. Its coast, largely intact, is today a major tourist asset. The fishing port remains essential.

Jijel weds Kabyle cuisine with marine wealth. Sardines à l'escabèche, marinated in vinegar, onions and carrots, are the port's specialty. Couscous with octopus and cuttlefish blends fine semolina and seafood. Charcoal-grilled fish, sea bream and rock bass, are eaten facing the bay. Kabyle flatbread (aghroum n'tamtount) accompanies family meals, buttered and drizzled with mountain honey. Lamb tagine with dried figs reflects Kabyle heritage. Bourekat with tuna and anchovies are essentials. On the sweet side, baghrir (thousand-hole pancake) with local honey, and zlabia scented with orange blossom water. Regional figs and Boumahni muscat grapes complete the summer offering.
