What to see and do — Jijel
Jijel, ancient Igilgili, was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC. Under Rome, it was a modest trading port. After Vandal and Byzantine invasions, Jijel became a Barbary corsair haven in the Middle Ages. The Barbarossa brothers landed here in 1514 — it was at Jijel that the Barbarossas began the conquest leading to the Regency of Algiers. The city was a nest of Ottoman piracy for three centuries. The French occupied it in 1839, naming it Djidjelli. During the independence war, the Kabyle hinterland of Jijel was a major ALN maquis. At independence, the city became a wilaya in 1974. Its coast, largely intact, is today a major tourist asset. The fishing port remains essential.
