History & culture
Illizi and its region trace to prehistoric epochs. Tassili, meaning "plateau of images" in Tamazight, teems with rock paintings testifying to relatively higher humidity periods (5000-1000 BC), when Sahara was less arid. These paintings, among world's oldest, depict now-extinct wildlife (giraffes, elephants, hippos) and human life scenes. Tuaregs, nomadic Saharan pastoralists, progressively establish presence. Illizi becomes crossroads of trans-Saharan trade routes. During French colonization, Tassili largely escapes exploration until 20th century. After Algerian independence, Tassili N'Ajjer is UNESCO World Heritage site (1982).

Illizian cuisine embraces Tuareg and Saharan traditions. Saharan tajine, slow-cooked, blends desert meat, vegetables, and spices. Aghroum, sweet couscous with dates and honey, is traditional festive dish. Berber tea, ritually prepared with mint, is essential: three glasses, progressively sweeter, rhythm conversations and hospitality. Dates (Deglet Noor, Ghars) are daily staple. Camel milk, ancestral Tuareg food, offers essential nutrients. Traditional bread baked in sand. Each meal celebrates survival in aridity.
How to get there
Illizi is accessible only by air from Algiers (flight ~2 hours). Road transport from north (40+ hours via desert trails) is discouraged. Once in Djanet, Tassili access requires MANDATORY 4x4 and ESSENTIAL local guide (quasi-nonexistent roads, intricate landscape). Tourist agencies in Djanet organize guided 3-7 day expeditions. Logistical autonomy required.
