What to see and do — Illizi
Illizi and its region trace to prehistoric epochs. Tassili, meaning "plateau of images" in Tamazight, teems with rock paintings testifying to relatively higher humidity periods (5000-1000 BC), when Sahara was less arid. These paintings, among world's oldest, depict now-extinct wildlife (giraffes, elephants, hippos) and human life scenes. Tuaregs, nomadic Saharan pastoralists, progressively establish presence.
