Tourism in El Meniaa
El Meniaa, made a wilaya in 2019 (formerly El Goléa), is a spectacular central Saharan oasis, 270 km south of Ghardaïa. Nicknamed "the pearl of the desert," it's famous for its lush palm grove of 300,000 date palms irrigated by abundant natural springs (rare in the Sahara), its old mud ksour and seasonal salt lake (sebkha). Father Charles de Foucauld is buried here (1916), making El Meniaa a Saharan Christian memorial site. The region offers contrasting landscapes: green palm grove, ocher ksour, orange dunes and rocky plateaus. Mandatory stop on RN1 between Ghardaïa and Tamanrasset.

History & culture
El Meniaa oasis has been inhabited since prehistoric antiquity (surrounding rock engravings). Berber Zenetes founded the first ksour in the 10th century. A major trans-Saharan caravan trade stop, El Goléa (former name) became an influential 13th-century Sufi center. The region passed under Hammadid, Almohad influence, then was autonomous until French conquest. Father Charles de Foucauld, French Christian hermit based in Tamanrasset, was murdered in 1916 and buried at El Meniaa per his wishes. The French developed a military post and administration. The oasis prospered through intensive agriculture (dates) and livestock. El Meniaa became a Ghardaïa daira, then autonomous wilaya in 2019.

El Meniaa cuisine is classic Saharan. Couscous with mutton and garden vegetables is Sunday's. Deglet Nour palm-grove dates are eaten fresh (October-December) or stuffed with almonds. Marqa with mutton and tomatoes slow-simmers, spice-perfumed. Taguella, wheat bread under sand, is consumed in the wild. Rfis with dates (semolina + dates + butter) is a celebration dessert. Mint tea is served in three rounds. Camel milk (chaubi) and Saharan honey complete the offering. Fresh fruit juices (orange, pomegranate) are available in season.
How to get there
El Meniaa is 880 km south of Algiers on RN1. No own airport — the nearest is Hassi R'Mel or Ghardaïa (270 km north, 3h by taxi). Air Algérie flight to Ghardaïa (1h from Algiers) then private taxi is most practical. The road from Algiers via Ghardaïa (RN1) takes 11-13h driving (two stages recommended). Locally, private taxis or 4x4 serve the palm grove, ksour and dunes. For central Sahara expeditions (toward In Salah 270 km south), 4x4 with local guide recommended.
