What to see and do — El Meniaa
El Meniaa oasis has been inhabited since prehistoric antiquity (surrounding rock engravings). Berber Zenetes founded the first ksour in the 10th century. A major trans-Saharan caravan trade stop, El Goléa (former name) became an influential 13th-century Sufi center. The region passed under Hammadid, Almohad influence, then was autonomous until French conquest. Father Charles de Foucauld, French Christian hermit based in Tamanrasset, was murdered in 1916 and buried at El Meniaa per his wishes. The French developed a military post and administration. The oasis prospered through intensive agriculture (dates) and livestock. El Meniaa became a Ghardaïa daira, then autonomous wilaya in 2019.
