Tourism in Biskra

Biskra, the "Gateway to the Desert," is one of Algeria's most famous oases. Sitting at the transition between the Aurès to the north and the Sahara to the south, it is renowned for its palm groves — a million date palms — producing the Deglet Nour date, considered the world's finest variety. Biskra once captivated Henri Matisse, who stayed in 1906 and found inspiration for his saturated colors. Andrew Carnegie built a legendary hotel here, and Cardinal Lavigerie made it a colonial outpost. The city combines an ochre old medina, lush gardens at the desert's edge, and direct access to the spectacular El Kantara gorges — the "mouth of the Sahara."

History & culture

Biskra has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The Romans built Vescera here, a stop on the Saharan frontier (limes). In the 7th century, Sidi Okba, a companion of the Prophet, died here and is buried in the first mosque of the Maghreb (still visible in Sidi Okba village, 18 km). The city passed under the Aghlabids, Hammadids, then became an independent Berber sultanate under the Banou Mozni in the 14th century. The Ottomans attached it to the Regency of Algiers. The French occupied it in 1844, turning it into a winter resort prized by wealthy Europeans (Empress Eugénie de Montijo stayed here). Henri Matisse, André Gide, Oscar Wilde drew inspiration. Today, Biskra is a major agricultural, university and tourist center of southern Algeria.

Local cuisine

Biskri cuisine is rich, soaked in sun and dates. Biskria chakhchoukha, the signature dish, combines crumbled flatbread with a three-meat sauce (mutton, chicken, lamb) flavored with tomato and pepper. Tajine zitoune (with olives) and rfis with dates (semolina + dates + clarified butter) are essential. Deglet Nour dates are eaten fresh from October to December, stuffed with almonds, or as sweet paste (assida). Cardamom-flavored coffee is served with dates. Mihrab (cumin tripe sauce) is served in the morning in old cafés. Prickly pear jams, Aurès honey, and Zab olive oil complete family tables.

How to get there

Biskra is 425 km southeast of Algiers via the East-West motorway then RN3 (5-6h by car). SNTF runs a rail link (Algiers-Biskra ~10h, ~1200 DA, comfortable night train). Mohamed Khider airport, 10 km out, has 2-3 daily flights from Algiers (1h05). Long-distance buses depart daily from Caroubier. Locally, taxis and city buses serve the palm groves and Sidi Okba. For El Kantara (50 km) and Tolga (33 km), plan on a private taxi or rental car — an ideal base to explore the Aurès and the desert threshold.

When to visit Biskra?

Biskra has an attenuated Saharan climate: scorching summers, mild winters. From May to September, temperatures range 30-45°C (record 49°C in July), avoid daytime visits. From December to February, pleasant days (18-23°C), cool nights (5-10°C) — the best tourist season. October-November and March-April are also excellent: 22-28°C, palm groves in harvest or flowering. Very low rainfall (150 mm/year), record sunshine (3,200 h/year). Sporadic but sometimes violent rains (flash floods).
