Tourism in Annaba

Annaba, ancient Hippo Regius, is a coastal city in northeastern Algeria with thousands of years of history. Its natural harbor, fine sandy beaches (Saint-Cloud, Toche, Aïn Achir) and mountainous hinterland make it a top seaside and cultural destination. Saint Augustine lived here and wrote his Confessions; the basilica bearing his name still dominates the city from its hill. Annaba blends Roman ruins, colonial heritage and the energy of a large university town. Its sheltered bay, wine-producing hinterland and proximity to El Kala National Park make it an ideal base to explore eastern Algeria.

History & culture

Hippo was founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians and became one of the most prosperous cities of Roman Africa. Saint Augustine served as its bishop from 396 to 430 and died during the Vandal siege. The city passed under Vandal, Byzantine and then Arab rule in the 7th century, and was renamed Bouna. Tunisian Hafsids and later Ottomans ruled successively. In 1832 the French captured the city and renamed it Bône. It became a major military and mining port (iron from Ouenza). At independence in 1962 it reclaimed its Arabic name Annaba. Today it is Algeria's fourth economic hub, home to the El Hadjar steelworks and a major deepwater port.

Local cuisine

Annaba's cuisine blends seafood with hinterland traditions. Bônoise chorba, a red tomato-and-meat soup, opens winter meals. Charcoal-grilled fish — seasonal sardines, sea bream, red mullet — is eaten facing the port. M'sammen (flaky flatbread) accompanies local honey and fresh cheese. Mhalbi, a milk pudding scented with orange blossom, is a city specialty. Honey-and-almond pastries (baklawa, makroud) are everywhere during Ramadan. Maure coffee is enjoyed on the Cours de la Révolution, and fresh juices (orange, pomegranate) accompany family tables. Mazoula wine, a colonial legacy, is still produced in the hinterland vineyards.
