What to see and do — Annaba
Hippo was founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians and became one of the most prosperous cities of Roman Africa. Saint Augustine served as its bishop from 396 to 430 and died during the Vandal siege. The city passed under Vandal, Byzantine and then Arab rule in the 7th century, and was renamed Bouna. Tunisian Hafsids and later Ottomans ruled successively. In 1832 the French captured the city and renamed it Bône. It became a major military and mining port (iron from Ouenza). At independence in 1962 it reclaimed its Arabic name Annaba. Today it is Algeria's fourth economic hub, home to the El Hadjar steelworks and a major deepwater port.
