What to see and do — Tipasa
Tipaza (Tipasa) is founded in the 6th century BC by Phoenicians. It becomes a prosperous Numidian colony before passing under Roman control in the 1st century. Under Rome, it flourishes as a merchant port and military center. Early Christians establish religious communities from the 3rd century. The royal antique monument of Tipaza, built in the 1st century, symbolizes Numidian grandeur. After Vandal invasions (5th century), then Byzantine, Tipaza declines. Arabs conquer the site in the 7th century. During Ottoman period, the site is largely abandoned. French colonization rediscovers Tipaza as archaeological site in the 19th century. Modern excavations begin in the 20th century, revealing its historical wealth.
