What to see and do — Timimoun

The Gourara has been inhabited for 10,000 years (rock engravings). Berber Zenetes founded the first ksour around 1000 AD. In the 14th century, trans-Saharan trade made the Gourara a strategic stop between Timbuktu and the Maghreb. Caravans brought gold, slaves, salt and ivory. Ksour like Aghlad, Ouled Saïd, Tihirhart were built in red ocher mud. The Gourara was deeply Islamized in the 13th-14th centuries, becoming a Sufi center (Sidi El Hadj Belkacem traditional cultural center at Kenadsa). The Ottomans exercised only nominal control. The French entered the Gourara in 1900, took Timimoun and organized colonial administration. At independence, Timimoun was attached to Adrar, then made a separate wilaya in 2019 — late recognition of a strong identity. Today Saharan tourism is slowly resuming after the security difficulties of the 1990s.
