Tamanrasset exists as established city only since early 20th century, built as colonial garrison in the desert. The Hoggar region, inhabited for millennia by Tuaregs, nomadic peoples with prestigious warrior traditions, retains its strategic and spiritual importance. The Assekrem monastery, built in 1910 by Father de Foucauld, becomes symbol of spirituality in the desert. Prehistoric rock paintings testify to ancient human presence in Hoggar.
