Thagaste was founded by the Numidians then became a prosperous Roman city, famous as the birthplace of Saint Augustine (354-430), born into a Christianized Berber family. Augustine is one of the Church Fathers, author of City of God and Confessions — founder of Western Christian theology. The city prospered under Rome then became a stop on the route between Carthage and the interior. After Vandals and Byzantines, 7th-century Islamization transformed the region. Souk Ahras became a commercial stop in the Middle Ages. The Ottomans attached it to the Constantine beylik. The French entered in 1842 and developed agriculture and forestry. During the independence war, the massifs were FLN maquis. At independence, Souk Ahras became a wilaya in 1984.
