What to see and do — Sidi Bel Abbès
The region has been inhabited since antiquity by Numidian Berbers then under Roman domination (modest remains). The 8th-century Islamization brought the Beni Amer and Beni Hadyel tribes. In the 18th century, the city developed as a regional caravan hub. The French founded the modern city in 1843 as a strategic stop between Oran and Tlemcen, installing the Foreign Legion HQ there in 1843. The city prospered thanks to the Legionnaires and colonial agriculture (cereals, vines). During the independence war, it was the French military nerve center of western Algeria. At independence in 1962, the Legion was transferred to Aubagne (France). The reconverted city became an agro-food and university hub. Djillali Liabès University is one of the country's largest.
