What to see and do — Sétif
Sétif was founded in the 1st century BC as a Roman colony named Sitifis, becoming capital of Mauretania Sitifensis. It was evangelized early and hosted a Christian bishopric. Vandals then Byzantines followed before the Arab conquest and the Hammadid dynasty made it a trade stop. The Ottomans kept a garrison there. The French occupied it in 1838 and developed cereal farming on the high plateaus. On May 8, 1945, Allied victory day, an independence rally was bloodily suppressed (estimates 6,000 to 45,000 dead in the region), triggering nationalist awareness. Sétif gained wilaya status in 1974 and became an agro-industrial and university hub.
