What to see and do — Relizane

Relizane has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was a prosperous agricultural region with several agrarian villas. In the Middle Ages, it passed under Almohad then Tlemcen Zianid authority. A stop on the Tlemcen-Algiers route, the region prospered through irrigated agriculture. The Ottomans attached it to the Western beylik and built a garrison. The French entered in 1841 and intensively developed colonial agriculture (cereals, vineyards, oranges). During the independence war, the region was a combat zone. At independence, Relizane became a wilaya in 1984. Today it's a major agro-industrial hub and food processing center.
