What to see and doOum El Bouaghi

The Oum El Bouaghi region has been inhabited since antiquity. Under Numidian king Massinissa (202-148 BC), it was one of the key cereal zones of Numidia. Under the Romans, intensive agriculture developed. In the Middle Ages, the region passed under Hammadid then Almohad authority. The Ottomans attached it to the Constantine beylik. The French entered in 1837 and developed cereal agriculture and livestock. The region experienced several 19th-century insurrections. During the independence war, the neighboring Aurès and local massifs were major FLN maquis. At independence, Oum El Bouaghi was attached to Constantine then became a wilaya in 1974. Today it's a major agricultural and pastoral hub.
