What to see and do — Ouled Djellal

Ouled Djellal has been inhabited since antiquity, an oasis on the caravan route between Biskra and Touggourt. In the Middle Ages, the Ouled Djellal Arab tribe settled here, giving its name to the region. The tribe developed extensive sheep farming on high plateaus and seasonal transhumances — creating the eponymous sheep breed. Under the Ottomans, the region was attached to the Constantine beylik. The French entered in 1844 during Saharan campaigns, and developed agriculture and livestock. At independence, Ouled Djellal was attached to Biskra. In 2019, it was made an autonomous wilaya along with ten other Saharan wilayas, recognizing its specific pastoral and oasis identity. Today it's an important regional center for livestock, date production and irrigated agriculture.
