What to see and do — Oran

Founded in the 7th century by Spanish settlers, Oran experienced turbulent history alternating between Muslim and Christian control. After its surrender to the Ottomans in 1708, it became a strategic bastion of the Ottoman Empire in Western Mediterranean. The city prospered as a major trading port with caravanserais and fortresses. French colonization (1831-1962) modernized Oran as an important commercial and military port. Its Belle Époque architecture testifies to this period. The war of independence deeply marked the city, notably during 1962 events. Today, Oran emerges as a major cultural center, birthplace of raï music and symbol of Algerian youth.
