What to see and do — In Salah
In Salah (meaning "weeping spring" in Tuareg) is an ancestral oasis inhabited for 2,000 years. A mandatory stop on the trans-Saharan caravan route between Timbuktu and the Maghreb, it was frequented by Arab, Jewish and Kel Aïr Tuareg merchants. The red-mud ksour — Bardja, Foggaret Ezzaouïa, Mihan — date from the Middle Ages. The region came under Sufi influence in the 15th century. The French entered In Salah in 1900 (Foureau-Lamy mission), in a difficult battle against nomads. Under colonization, In Salah was a strategic stop of the motorized Trans-Saharan. At independence, it was attached to Tamanrasset. The gigantic In Salah gas field was discovered in the 1950s but exploited at large scale only since 2004 — making In Salah a major energy hub. The autonomous wilaya was created in 2019.
