What to see and do — El M'Ghair
El M'Ghair has been inhabited since antiquity, an oasis on the caravan route between Biskra and Touggourt. In the Middle Ages, it prospered through date and barley trade exchanged for salt, fabrics and spices from the Maghreb. The region passed under nominal Hafsid authority, then Ottoman influence. The French penetrated in 1844 during Saharan campaigns, installing a secondary post. Under colonization, El M'Ghair developed intensive date-palm agriculture. At independence, El M'Ghair was attached to El Oued then Touggourt. In 2019, it was made an autonomous wilaya along with ten other new Saharan wilayas, recognizing its specific Souf-oasis identity.
