What to see and do — El Bayadh
The El Bayadh region has been inhabited for 10,000 years — djebel Amour rock engravings testify to a green Sahara populated by giraffes, lions, elephants. Berber Zenetes, then Arab Hamian tribes, dominated the territory in the Middle Ages. A stop on the caravan route linking Tlemcen to the Touat, El Bayadh prospered through trade. The Ottomans exercised only nominal authority. The French entered the region in 1872 during southwest pacification, founding a military post in 1881 (then "Géryville"). The region was a combat zone during the Bou Amama insurrection (1881-1908). At independence in 1962, Géryville resumed the name El Bayadh. The wilaya was created in 1984. Today it's a major pastoral hub and a secret for prehistoric archaeology enthusiasts.
