What to see and do — Bordj Bou Arréridj
The Constantine high plateaus region has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was a zone of prosperous cereal plains. In the Middle Ages, Berber Houara and Beni Hammad dominated. Bordj Bou Arréridj takes its name from the "bordj" (fort) built in the 17th century by Bou Arréridj, an Ottoman dignitary. The city became a strategic garrison between Algiers and Constantine. The French entered in 1839 and developed intensive cereal agriculture. During the independence war, the Bibans were a major FLN maquis. At independence, BBA became a wilaya in 1974. From the 2000s, the wilaya transformed into a major industrial hub with Condor (consumer electronics, African exports). Today, BBA is a dynamic wilaya combining industry, agriculture and heritage.
