What to see and do — Batna
Batna was founded in 1844 as a French military garrison in the heart of the Aurès, shortly after the region's annexation. Human history here, however, dates back 200,000 years (Aïn Boucherit prehistoric sites). Under Rome, Timgad (Thamugadi), founded by Trajan in 100 AD for III Legion veterans, became a major North African city with its theater, library (oldest in Roman Africa) and Arch of Trajan. Destroyed by the Vandals then abandoned, it was buried by sand until rediscovered in the 19th century. The Aurès resisted Islamization and the French: it was here on November 1, 1954 that the war of independence erupted, led by Mostefa Ben Boulaïd, a regional native. Batna is the strategic wilaya of this fighting memory.
