What to see and do — Aïn Defla
The region has been inhabited since antiquity. Under the Romans, it was a prosperous agricultural zone, crossed by the Roman road linking Cherchell (Caesarea) to Tiaret. In the Middle Ages, Aïn Defla passed under Hammadid then Tlemcen Zianid authority. The Ottomans attached it to the Médéa beylik. The French entered in 1843 and intensively developed agriculture (cereals, vineyards, citrus). The region was a combat zone during several insurrections. During the independence war, Ouarsenis and Zaccar massifs were major FLN maquis (Wilaya IV). At independence, Aïn Defla was attached to Algiers then became an autonomous wilaya in 1984. Theniet El Had National Park was created in 1983.
