Timimoun, nicknamed the "red oasis" for the ocher tint of its mud-brick ksour, is one of Algeria's Saharan jewels. Capital of the Gourara — a northwestern Saharan region with hundreds of scattered oases — it is famous for its palm groves irrigated by foggaras (millennial underground canals), its fortified ksour perched on plateaus, and its orange dunes contrasting with the ocher red of buildings. Gourari culture mixes Zenete Berber, Arab and Black African, creating a unique identity.
