Souk Ahras, ancient Thagaste, is one of Algeria's most history-laden wilayas: this is where Saint Augustine was born in 354 AD, one of the Fathers of the Christian Church and author of the Confessions. 640 km east of Algiers on the Tunisian border, at 700 m altitude, it's surrounded by dense forests (Edough and Beni Salah National Park), cereal plains and mountain massifs. The region offers ancient heritage (Thagaste, Madauros), preserved nature and historic border with Tunisia.
