Sidi Bel Abbès, capital of the eponymous wilaya, is an inland city in northwestern Algeria, founded in the 19th century by the French as a Foreign Legion garrison. For 130 years (1832-1962), this was the global headquarters of the French Foreign Legion, which profoundly marked local urbanism, architecture and culture. Today Sidi Bel Abbès is a dynamic university hub and a major agricultural center of the Oran Tell's grain plains. The region offers varied landscapes: Tessala mountains, rolling plains, Beni Smir forests, and the large Sarno reservoir lake.
