Béchar, capital of the Saoura, is the major southwestern Algerian wilaya, gateway to the desert for those wanting to explore Taghit, Beni Abbès and the Grand Western Erg. At 770 m altitude at the foot of the Saharan Atlas, it combines contrasting landscapes: green oases at the foot of orange dunes, old ksour, prehistoric rock engravings of the Saoura. Taghit, 90 km south of Béchar, is a spectacular oasis between palm grove and dunes, nicknamed "the pearl of the Saoura." The region is a historic border post with Morocco and the cradle of a living nomadic culture (Châamba, Réguibat).
