Batna is the historical and cultural capital of the Aurès, a Berber massif in northeastern Algeria. At 1,040 m altitude, it's an ideal base to explore the UNESCO site of Timgad — one of the world's finest Roman cities — along with the Ghoufi Balconies, a spectacular canyon carved by the Abiod river, and perched Chaoui villages. Batna is also the gateway to Belezma National Park, a sanctuary of cedars and Barbary deer. The region is the cradle of Chaoui culture, one of Algeria's major Berber identities, with its language (Tachawit), traditional tattoos and unique pentatonic music.
