Tourism in Naâma
Naâma is a southwestern border wilaya, spread between the western high plateaus and Sahara at 1,200 m altitude. Its capital Aïn Sefra, nestled between dunes and mountains, is famous for having hosted Swiss writer-explorer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904), who died there in a sudden flood. The region offers contrasting landscapes: Ksour mountains (up to 2,236 m at Mount Aïssa), pre-Saharan dunes, steppe plains, old ksour and rock engravings. It's a well-kept secret of southern Algeria, for travelers seeking spectacular landscapes and literary history.

History & culture
The region has been inhabited since prehistory (rock engravings in djebel Béchar). Berber Zenetes, then Arab Doui Menia and Beni Guil tribes, dominated the Western High Plateaus in the Middle Ages. A stop on the caravan route linking Tlemcen to the Touat and Western Sahara, Naâma prospered through trade and livestock. The Ottomans exercised only nominal authority. The French entered in 1872, founded Aïn Sefra in 1881 as a Moroccan border garrison. The region was a combat zone during the Bou Amama insurrection (1881-1908). Isabelle Eberhardt, an Islam-converted writer, settled here in 1904 and died the same year in a tragic flash flood. At independence, Naâma was attached to Saïda, then became a wilaya in 1984. The region is today pastoral and strategic (Moroccan border).

Naâma cuisine is typical of the high plateaus and steppe. Mutton couscous (Hamra breed), generously served, is Sunday's. Mechoui (whole roasted mutton) marks celebrations and guest welcomes. Trida (homemade square pasta) in white sauce with dried vegetables accompanies occasions. Barley flatbread (kesra) cooked on clay tagine accompanies every meal, with local honey and olive oil. Arabic coffee and pine-nut mint tea pace the days. Pre-Saharan oasis dates are consumed in autumn. Fermented milk (lben) and fresh goat cheeses complete the offering. Gastronomy remains pastoral and austere.
How to get there
From Algiers, Naâma is 660 km southwest. No own airport — flight to Béchar (220 km southwest, 1h30 from Algiers) then taxi (3h), or flight to Oran (300 km north, daily flights).
